『スターウォーズ』をオールナイトでみた東宝劇場。この時オールナイトと吉野屋を初体験した。
『レイダース失われたアーク』の入りが『キャノンボール』より振るわなくて『インディジョーンズ魔宮の伝説』を東宝劇場ではやってくれなかった〔日乃出にまわされた〕ことをちょっと恨んだこともあった。
駅前にある大きなスクリーンを持つ映画館、そんな東宝劇場が2月26日をもってその歴史に幕を閉じる。
小さなスクリーンになれてしまっていた自分には、東宝劇場のスクリーンにむかうたび負けるものかと気合いが入った。人の頭が苦手だった自分は一番前に座ることでそのそれを避けていた。今はもう無くなってしまったが仙台市内の映画館は最前列で制覇していた。しかしこの東宝劇場だけはどうしても1番前では苦痛が残り2列目に甘んじてしまった。とはいえよっぽどのことがない限り、自分の前に人がいたためしはなかった。
2列目でもスクリーンの隅々をみるという行為は結構訓練がいったと思う。日本の映画であれば真ん中に座っても大丈夫なのだが、字幕が出るものは下か右かで若干その座席が左右に揺れる、そのちょっとした駆け引きも楽しんでいた。おそらく眼は物凄い動きになっていたと思うし沈めた腰には結構負担がかかっていたと思う。そんな思いまでして前へ前へとむかわせたものはこのスクリーンの大きさを感じたいという思いがとても強かった。このスクリーンに覆い被されて映画を味わいたいという思い。映画が始まるのだというわくわくした胸の高鳴りのように幕がふわっと開く、あの何とも言えない風を含んだ幕の静かな揺れに潜るようにして始まる瞬間。前の席でしか味わえない至福。そんな東宝にさよならする日がもうそこまで来てしまった。

『ビリーザキッド新しい夜明け』『夢見るように眠りたい』といった今でいう邦画のインディーズ作品を初めてかけてくれた映画館だ。和田誠のポスターに惹かれ『夢見るように眠りたい』をみにいった。チラシも充分になく、パンフレットも売っていなかった。この映画の資料は何一つ残っていないけれど、若い監督の初めての映画に初めて触れた、そして観たという記憶が強く残っている。今思うとよくやってくれたものだと思う。
そういえば、今は東宝系のメジャー、新作話題作のみの上映だが、鈴木清順監督の『ツゴイネルワイゼン』と大森一樹監督の『ヒポクラテスたち』といったATG作品を上映したことがあった。もしかするとATG作品はもっと上映していたのかもしれないけれど、その当時余りお金が無く名画座という二番館の映画館に通い詰めていた自分にとって、この2本の作品を何故東宝で？？という不思議さと、そしてこの大きなスクリーンで観ることが出来た興奮、『ツゴイネルワイゼン』の桜の美しさに圧倒され日本映画の凄さを知ったのもこの劇場だった。
映画祭を始めたきっかけは日本の若手の作品をもっと仙台で上映したいと考えたことからだったが、その日本映画の面白さに出会わせてくれたのが東宝劇場だったという、今こうして考えると不思議な劇場だったという思いがこみ上げてくる。
